EMAT Pediatric Emergency Medicine Working Group was founded at the meeting of the Board of Directors of EMAT on January 06, 2020 to cooperate with national and international physicians and organizations involved in the emergency healthcare services of pediatric patients, to share information about pediatric emergency medicine (clinical, educational, guidelines, etc.) and to make recommendations to the healthcare authorities for the future of pediatric emergency medicine.

Definitions:

  • Child: Defines a person from newborn up to 18 years old. Children aged 12-18 years have many similarities to adults. Children aged 16-18 years are regarded mostly as adults, however, those in this age group can be vulnerable in many aspects compared to adults.
  • Emergency Department: Defines an area of public or private healthcare facilities reserved for emergency care where patients can present without an appointment with any illnesses and injuries and be assessed by a team.
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine: Is a medical specialty that includes the set of knowledge and skills required to demonstrate rapid and effective approaches in the diagnosis, treatment, and referral of children who are acutely ill or injured. Pediatric emergency care includes the knowledge and skills in both pediatric and emergency medicine residency training.

Vision: EMAT Pediatric Emergency Medicine Working Group envisions to ensure that pediatric patients have access to up-to-date, scientific, and highest quality emergency healthcare services all over the country in cooperation with all national and international relevant physicians and organizations.

Mission: The mission of EMAT Pediatric Emergency Medicine Working Group is to cooperate with national and international physicians and organizations involved in the emergency healthcare services of pediatric patients, to share information about pediatric emergency medicine, to organize continuous professional education, to do scientific researches and to make recommendations to the healthcare authorities for the future of pediatric emergency medicine.

Aims and goals:

  • To communicate and cooperate with national and international individuals and organizations related to pediatric emergency medicine.
  • To increase collaboration between pediatricians, pediatric emergency medicine specialists, and emergency medicine specialists.
  • To promote the sharing of information between emergency medicine specialists, pediatricians, and pediatric emergency medicine specialists about the care and safety of pediatric patients.
  • To guide on the training curriculum of pediatric emergency medicine, to provide and assess the education of pediatric emergency medicine during residency training and after graduation.
  • To encourage the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to pediatric emergency medicine among emergency medicine specialists and residents.
  • To encourage all pediatric emergency healthcare providers to conduct scientific researches on pediatric emergency medicine.
  • To organize scientific activities such as workshops, courses, symposiums, congresses, etc. for every physicians providing medical care to pediatric emergency patients.
  • To create evidence-based guidelines and scientific resources for the safety and care of pediatric patients in the emergency department.
  • To follow the resources (journals, books, guides, etc.) related to pediatric emergency medicine, and to share them with the physicians who provide emergency care for pediatric patients.
  • To follow all positive and threatening developments in pediatric emergency medicine and to share them with physicians who provide emergency care for pediatric patients.
  • To advocate health equity in the care of all children and to raise awareness for social factors that affect health such as abuse, neglect, food insecurity, housing insecurity, and mental health care.
  • To ensure that pediatric emergency basic life support practices are widespread for health workers, medical students, and first aid providers.
  • To determine the standards of the areas where pediatric patients receive care in the emergency departments, and to contribute to the creation of national policies, guidelines, and consensus reports.
  • To make suggestions to the healthcare authorities according to the scientific researches on pediatric emergency medicine.
  • To contribute to international consensus reports for establishing policies and guidelines.
